What Size Shoe Do I Need To Fit An AFO Brace?
When wearing an Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO) brace, it's important to consider the appropriate shoe size to ensure a proper fit and optimal comfort. The sizing may vary depending on the specific AFO design and your individual foot characteristics, so it's recommended to consult with your healthcare provider or orthotist for personalized advice. However, here are a few general guidelines to consider:
Length: AFO braces typically add some bulk and length to the foot, so you may need a shoe size that accommodates the additional space. In some cases, you may need to go up by a half or full shoe size to provide enough room for the brace.
Width: AFO braces can also increase the width of your foot. Look for shoes with a wider toe box and/or Wide or Extra Wide widths to accommodate the brace's width.
Depth: The depth of the shoe is crucial to ensure that your foot and the AFO brace fit comfortably inside. Extra Depth or Double Depth shoes have multiple layers of removable inserts to adjust the depth of the shoe to provide enough interior space to accommodate the brace inside the shoe. All inserts are usually needed to be removed to accommodate the brace.

Do I Need Two Different Size Shoes for Foot Without Brace
Generally, two different size shoes are not needed unless there is more than a 1.5 difference in size or more than 1 full width. The multiple layers of removable depth in an Extra Depth or Double Depth shoe can take up space in shoe for the foot without the AFO brace. If two different sizes are needed, we do offer select brands in mismatched shoe sizes (Mt. Emey, Dr. Comfort, and Fitec).
